Make 2020 the year of sustainable living! With this year being the 50th year of celebrating Earth Day, now more than ever is the time to do your part in making simple lifestyle changes to be greener. It is the little things you do consciously every day that will go a long way in helping to save the Earth. Even though Earth Day is only once a year, the changes you make in being green will last for years to come!
So here are 5 things you can do in your everyday life to help save the Earth.
1) Take Public Transport, Walk or Bike
Instead of driving or taking taxis all the time, it’s time to be more car-conscious and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions you contribute to our planet. Take public transport whenever you can, especially in Singapore where we have an abundance of buses and trains everywhere, it is economical and better for the Earth. Another option is to walk or bike which will help reduce greenhouse gasses plus get a workout in.
2) Bring Your Own Reusable Takeaway Containers and Cups
Reduce single-use plastic waste! Let 2020 be the year you take steps in being conscious of how much plastic waste you are producing. One simple way to start is bringing your own reusable takeaway containers and reusable cups. Especially with Circuit Breaker and not being able to eat in, now is the time to start cultivating this good habit and contribute less to the HUGE waste problem we have in Singapore.
3) Have a Vegetarian Day Once a Week
Most of us are meat lovers and we know how hard it is to give up eating meat. That is why you don’t have to give up meat forever, just by having a vegetarian day once a week you can help save the Earth! Avoiding meat and dairy is one of the biggest ways to reduce your environmental impact on Earth. Did you know that it takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a single pound of beef and each hamburger that comes from animals on ex-forestry ground is responsible for the destruction of fifty-five square feet of forest? 4) Be Conscious of What You Are Purchasing
Firstly, try and buy locally grown produce or just local products in general. This will help to reduce the pollution generated by transporting products internationally and you can help support local businesses.
Secondly, purchase second-hand products when there is the option. Source for pre-loved items online or through thrift stores and you may be surprised by what you find for a fraction of the original price.
Lastly, shop from ethical and sustainable brands instead of mass-produced global brands. Especially for fashion where so many brands participate in unethical practices to produce cheap and low-quality clothes, it is important for us to support brands that care about our environment and not contribute to fast fashion!
5) Invest In a Bidet
In light of all the toilet paper craze due to the pandemic, now may be the time we all consider investing in a bidet. A bidet gives you a more hygienic bathroom experience and it helps the Earth by reducing the need for toilet paper. Millions of trees get cut down every year to make our toilet paper and every tree we can save is beneficial for our planet.
Let us all stop taking our Planet Earth for granted. It is time to take climate change and environmental changes seriously. Make an effort to make these small lifestyle changes for ourselves and for our Planet today.
